Deer Shed is Yorkshire’s unique music, arts and culture festival. This year it commences between 26th-29th July in the beautiful Baldersby Park in North Yorkshire. With weekend camping music festivals few and far between in God's own country, Deer Shed holds a prime place on the Yorkshire music-lover’s calendar.
Musically, the festival holds a mix of mainly indie and folk acts from different eras. Headliners include The Coral, Bombay Bicycle Club and CMAT. The Coral and Bombay are seasoned headliners, with recognisable hits. A wilder card for a festival headline slot is Irish Artist CMAT who is reaching her domination era. This year she headlined her biggest London show at the O2 Forum and sold ot Dublin’s Fairview Park. At Basement Leeds, we are most looking forward to her performance which is likely to be a showstopper of her post-breakup and self-reflective, country-soaked indie.
Flying the flag for Leeds artists on the lineup are Nature Kids and Ellur. Nature Kids are very much having their moment. Fresh out of winning the Green Man festival rising artists competition, with new member Shane in tow, their Deer Shed slot is sure to impress. Indie pop artist, Ellur’s career is similarly kicking off. She has strangely enough just supported Robbie Williams at Hyde Park. Well, I never! Part of a generation of vulnerable female indie pop reflected in stars such as Lola Young, she also has quite the following on TikTok. Her unreleased track ‘God Help Me Now’, talks of the inner turmoil of being unable to feel one’s feelings and opting for alcohol consumption to regulate uncomfortable emotions.
Northern artists and cultural figures dominate this line up that has something for everyone. From a book talk with Manchester Mayor, dubbed King of the North, Andy Burnham, to BBC Radio Leeds’ certified lettuce-tamer, Rima Ahmed, whose interview with Liz Truss put local radio back on the map. A wide selection of comedy is also available including former I’m A Celebrity Star and regular Deer Shed performer, Shappi Khorsandi.
Deer Shed was started, as a kids focused festival, aiming to give families an enjoyable environment they could rely on. As festivals struggle nationwide to stay afloat, it is lovely that this festival with Yorkshire at its heart, keeps beating. We can’t wait to pitch our tent!
